Project Name: Midland Metro Phase 1 Extensions

Client Name: Centro (West Midlands PTE)

Project Background:

Extensions to Line 1 of the Midland Metro from Wednesbury to Dudley and Brierley Hill, through Birmingham City Centre to Five Ways and into Wolverhampton City Centre, making innovative use of disused rail corridor for freight and Metro services.

Project Support:

We provided strategic advice and project management assistance to Centro for the development of three proposed extensions. This included the planning, programming and co-ordination of the TWA Order process, stakeholder management, assistance with preparation of Business Cases and liaison with government to secure funding support. We negotiated agreements with key stakeholders including Network Rail and three local authorities and secured substantial contributions to the project from major developers.

We are currently developing the procurement strategy and tender documentation for operations & maintenance, tram supply and infrastructure construction. Further services provided include associated risk management and the coordination of all land, property and third party issues.

We continue to provide strategic advice and support to deliver a new Business Case during a period of policy and funding uncertainty.

Close to a viaduct which will carry the Metro, at the junction of Great Charles Street, Snow Hill and Bath Street, was the site of Birmingham’s last public hanging. Philip Matsell was hanged in 1806 in front of a crowd of 40,000 for shooting and wounding a “peace officer” – an early form of police officer.
